Proposal to rename council ‘Argyll and the Isles’ still born

One of the troubles with massive majorities – as is the case at Argyll and Bute Council with its current ‘all but a handful of the SNP’ administration – is that:

  • the public never even get to hear the debate on some key issues;
  • and those issues never get to council meetings where what passes for democracy at least hears them – and where they are recorded.

The proposal from Councillor Bruce Marshall that Argyll and Bute Council consider changing its name to ‘Argyll and the Isles, Nature’s Paradise’ never made it out of the administration caucus and to the actual council meeting yesterday.

So no one know what the various councillors thought and said; or whether the arguments against it had any substance or were based on parochial turf protection.

The argument is that a name more representative of the actuality of the area would support the development of the tourism sector better than the clod-hopping misnomer ‘Argyll and Bute’ we labour under at the moment.
